
We normally kick off the year with an array of fantastic and colorful events, with the Lion and Dragon Dance Festival and Extravaganza and the New Years Day Horse Races welcoming the new year on January 1st. Keep in mind that as Covid-19 continues to present many challenges, the status of the various scheduled events may change at the last minute, some may be held in slightly different formats and of course adhering to any measures in effect at the time.
The Winterfest and Christmas celebrations will be wrapping up the first week of the month and preparations for the most revered event in the calendar, Chinese New Year will be getting underway in anticipation of the big day on February 1st, 2022.
January is a great month for enjoying the outdoors, for nature lovers, this is the time to visit our fantastic reserves and trails. Weather is pleasant and migrating birds are here in spades.

New Year's Day Race Meeting - January 1st, 2022

This is one of eight "Magnificent Race Days" being waged in the Sha Tin Race Course during the racing calendar.
This New Year's Day Race is full of excitement with the Chinese Club Challenge Cup a HK G3 race, being the highlight of the event.
Good luck on this very first day of the year!

Dragon and Lion Dance Extravaganza - TBA
Hundreds of colorful dragons, lions, happy Buddhas, acrobats, celestial guardians... running and parading through the streets of Hong Kong in one of the most colorful, thrilling and noisy events to welcome the new year. Truly a feast for the eyes!
Dragon Parades and Lion Dances are nothing new to the territory, however, this event really takes it to another level!
Themes vary from year to year, but are always accompanied by the usual troupes of acrobats and over 500 mascots and lucky animals.

Lunar New Year Lantern Displays

The Government of Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department sponsors a series of events to foster Chinese ethnic culture to residents and tourists alike.
As part of the Lunar New Year festivities, the department sets up an amazing annual Lantern Exhibition in the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront in the lead up to the Lantern Carnival which mark the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
When? From late January, exact dates TBA
Displays are lit 6:00pm to 11pm from Friday to Sunday.
Where? Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza by the Water Pools in front of the Clocktower, Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hong Kong Chinese New Year Flower Markets

A popular tradition in anticipation of Chinese New Year, Hong Kong Flower Markets are buzzing with a frenzy of activity as households prepare decorations as well as gifts for their loved ones.
Besides the normal flower markets that run year-round, one of the most popular Chinese New Year Flower Markets is set up just for the occasion in Victoria Park, although open during the day, best time to visit and catch all the electrifying atmosphere is at night, but be prepared for the crowds!
When? January 26 - February 1, 2022. On New Year's Eve January 31, 2022 it will be open throughout
until the early hours (6:00 am) of New Year's Day when it will come to a close. (Subject to change depending on Covid measures at the time)
Hours from 12:00 noon to midnight
Where? Several locations, main venue at Victoria Park, MTR Causeway Bay Station Exit E, then follow the crowds along Great George Street or MTR Tin Hau Station Exit A2, turn left at exit.

The Horse Races Are On! This is how you can attend

The horse races in Hong Kong whether or not you are a horse racing enthusiast is an experience not to be missed!
The beautiful horses, the skillful jockeys, the crowds going wild, they all add up to an exciting, fun-filled, thrilling atmosphere in two world-class venues, at the Sha Tin Racecourse and the iconic Happy Valley Racecourse.
The Happy Valley race course itself is a sight in itself, the city has built around it through the years and it is now practically surrounded by skyscrapers, an awesome experience specially at night when the city is illuminated.
When?: Happy Valley Night Races on Wednesday Nights. On race day, first race starts at 7:15 p.m. and the gates open at 5:15 p.m.
The races are done by 11:00 p.m.
Sha Tin Day Races are on Sundays. First race normally starts at 1:00 pm, earlier if there are more than 10 races. Gates open at 11:00 am.
How Much? There are many ways to experience the races, from General Stand to Private Boxes and
special packages including dinner and drinks. General Stand entrance starts at HK10.
